-- In a statement marking the 75th anniversaries of the Battle of Okinawa, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the end of World War II and the founding of the United Nations, the Catholic bishops of Japan renew their determination to seek and take action for peace. "No one should start war, no matter what the rationale may be," they say, warning that "the world is now in an uncertain situation where we face a new Cold War" due to instability in East Asia and the threats posed by nuclear weapons and the global environmental crisis.

-- The Vatican doctrinal congregation issues a "vademecum," or handbook, providing bishops, religious superiors and canon lawyers a step-by-step guide for handling accusations of alleged abuse by clerics against minors. Rather than new material, the text consolidates existing law in an effort to promote its consistent application and can be updated as the need arises.
